City of Marzamemi and a brief history

The village of Marzamemi is a seaside village located on the coast in the province of Syracuse, 20 km from the city of Noto, the Baroque capital.

The village was born around the fishing port still active today. In the port, there is a Tonnara, one of the most important in Sicily. This dates back to the time of Spanish rule in Sicily in the 1600s. In 1752 the construction of the church of the tonnara church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed. Also the birth of the nearby Pachino gave an impulse to the growth of the village which allowed to increase the number of goods traded by sea with Liguria and France. The main goods were wine and salt, both high quality products still famous today.

In 1912 a salted and preserved tuna processing plant was built.

The ruins that are still found today at the entrance of the village are conservative establishments. They collapsed most of the roof due to Allied bombing in the area during World War II in 1943.
